Massachusetts is ranked first in New England for direct sales of farm products to consumers, according to the 2012 U.S. Census. That has uniquely positioned our farmers to be in contact with their end-users, to answer their questions and educate them about on-farm practices.
For this reason, the P&E Committee is tasked with promoting Massachusetts agriculture and, in turn Massachusetts Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF). For example, one of this committee’s first undertakings was hosting on-farm fundraisers for cancer research. All totaled, the committee raised more than $30,000 for cancer research and was able to provide consumers with a positive, farm experience. This program was also awarded with American Farm Bureau Federation’s New Horizon Award for its innovativeness.
But this committee is also about providing leadership and learning opportunities for Massachusetts farmers. For example, in 2017, the committee worked with 3M to provide a workshop at the annual meeting about the Worker Protection Standard (WPS). These types of learning sessions help our members grow their business.
Committee members must be regular Farm Bureau members and are nominated by County Farm Bureau board of directors. If you’re interested in becoming involved in this committee, please contact your County Farm Bureau.
